The staff will decide whether you need to apply for a new one or not. In my case, a staff told me that I can still travel with my passport because the important details are clear and the microchip is still intact, but it will be a big risk. Out of all the staff that I spoke to, only one person said that my passport will not be accepted at the immigration gates. Btw, the rules vary in every country. I think I never had a problem here in the GCC and in the Philippines as I have my UAE residence visa stamped in the same passport.
