Sumo Sushi and Bento: Date Night in Al Qasba

I have been a maki monster lately. I've had California Maki almost every weekend, to the point that Ed already thinks my appetite is extremely weird. No, it's not what you think! Even during our recent date night in Al Qasba in Sharjah, I still bugged him for Japanese rolls although his palate was screaming for change.

Ed wanted some peri-peri roast chicken. I, being submissive (sometimes), had our Entertainer voucher for the Portuguese restaurant ready. But, it turned out that the restaurant is under renovation! Hah! Good news for me in this case! Don't get me wrong, I love that peri-peri restaurant too. It's just that I desperately needed to go to Sumo Sushi and Bento to give in to my cravings! :)

And so, it was Japanese night once again!

Sumo Sushi and Bento: Al Qasba Branch
Sumo Sushi and Bento restaurant in Al Qasba is warm and cozy, but quite cramped. Although, there are tables for al fresco dining, no one dared to dine outdoor. Who would in this crazy summer weather? Hence, the small space inside seemed a little crowded.

It was our first time to dine in a Sumo Sushi and Bento restaurant. We've had some of their offerings several times through food delivery and in a food carnival, and we loved it! I was thrilled to finally have a proper dining experience at Sumo and of course to have my cravings sorted.

Japanese Date Night at Sumo Sushi and Bento
While browsing the menu, I noticed that Sumo serves a variety of Uramaki. They even have a sushi sandwich! Interesting! It was still California Maki for me though! Ed asked for a Chicken Katsu Bento and upon hearing it, I ordered Tempura Bento. My husband's eyes grew wide with my choices. It was his way of silently telling me that my eyes are bigger than my stomach.

I had bad cravings and I was hungry. It was my dunch (lunch and dinner, or whatever you call it). But, whatever my reason is, I think he's right. I ordered too much.

Tempura Bento for the Lady who has eyes bigger than her stomach!
Definitely not something to be proud of, I know! :)

The husband took two of the California Rolls and I had four! It's satisfying and very filling. As for the bentos, well, both are MASSIVE! The Tempura Bento has a hefty serving of rice, vegetables and chicken teriyaki. I'm a big tempura fan. I want it light, crunchy outside and tender inside. And Sumo perfectly delivered!

The teriyaki was not the yummiest I ever had, but it's okay. I think Sumo's teriyaki at Dubai Food Carnival was way tastier. I don't know, maybe I was just drowned in the goodness of the tempura and the maki that I failed to appreciate other stuff.

Ed's chicken katsu was served with vegetables and layered on top of a bowl full of rice! I had the smallest piece and I think it's delish, but he never got to finish it. Not because he doesn't like it, but because he helped me with my huge dinner! We took home half of the chicken katsu as we couldn't just leave the pieces of savory chicken cutlet with crispy breading behind!

The SUMOjito and The Green Tea Ice Cream
I got the SUMOjito because it's seemingly perfect for hot summer nights, but it was too sweet for my liking. I only had a few sips, then I ordered a bottle of water to wash down the sugary remnant that lingered in my throat. :(

Well, that frown was turned upside down when dessert was served. I didn't want to go wrong with dessert, hence I checked Foursquare for some recommendations. When I saw that people talked about Sumo's Japanese Green Tea ice cream so much, it was a sign. It is rich and creamy, delicate and lightly sweetened. And the best part of all, the heavenly dessert only costs 10 dirhams!
